Holiday Nutrition

Finding Balance in Holiday Eating

Most nutritionists will agree that a single day splurge of holiday over-eating will not wreck your entire healthy eating goals. Obviously, people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease have less leeway for going off their food plans, but in general, an occasional food indulgence at this time of year is reasonable to avoid feeling “deprived”. Here are some tips to help you stick to your holiday nutrition goals:

  • When attending a holiday party, move to the side of the room opposite the buffet table. Don’t choose a chair next to the chips and dips table, either. Keep the temptation to nibble as far away as you can.
  • Don’t starve yourself to save up for a big holiday meal. This strategy usually backfires because you will be over-hungry and attack the meal with gusto.
  • Never go to the mall hungry. (This rule applies all year long.) The aroma of fast food is like a magnet, pulling you off your nutritional track.
  • Find other healthy eaters to bond with at events. Look for the ones with more veggies on their plates than pigs in blankets.

Above all, think about what you’re choosing to eat at any moment. Remind yourself of your commitment to good health. Eat slowly and mindfully, savoring every bite and everything that is going on around you.

Happy Holidays and Happy Healthy New Year.
